The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has commissioned four projects intended to enhance healthcare delivery in the country. The projects were commissioned by the First Lady Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills and supported by the Minister for Health, Dr Benjamin Kumbuor on Tuesday, June 29, 2010. The projects are the New Reproductive Health Centre, the Cell Biology (DNA) Laboratory Centre, The Tower Block of the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre and the refurbished Medical Block. The first phase of the Reproductive Health Centre which cost about $500,000 was funded by the Population Council of Ghana and Korle Bu’s internally generated funds. The new centre will provide advance reproductive health care for Ghanaians, especially women. The Cell Biology Laboratory popularly called the DNA Laboratory is the latest innovative addition to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Laboratory services. The DNA Laboratory which is to offer diagnostic and forensic services, including research into various genetic disease conditions was set up through a collaborative effort between the hospital and Goodman Impex at a cost of $278,000. The Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre and the refurbished Medical Block were completed at the cost of GH¢ 1m and GH¢ 2.2m respectively, and were both funded by the Government of Ghana. Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills commended management and staff of the hospital for responding rapidly to challenges confronting the hospital. She said although there had been positive developments in the hospital, there was the need to prioritise healthcare services for women who made huge sacrifices during their reproductive lives and contributed to the economy of Ghana. Mrs. Naadu Mills appealed for assistance to enable the hospital establish a fitting gynaecology centre of excellence that would administer special care and treatment to women in the country. In his address, the Minister for Health, Dr Benjamin Kumbuor, assured the board and management of the hospital of government’s support to upgrade facilities and replace obsolete equipment to enhance service delivery.
