Former President Kufuor has described the renaming of the building which is supposed to serve as the official seat of the president from the Jubilee house to its old name Flagstaff House as one borne out of envy and hatred by the current President John Evans Atta Mills-led administration.
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, in his first ever public interview on the matter with Adom News on Monday said, it is sad that someone will give birth to a child and name the child only for a successor to come and change the name of the child.
The Golden Jubilee House, which was constructed by the Kufuor administration amidst criticisms from the then opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), now has Flagstaff House written on its wall.
The over $70 million edifice which has office and residential premises for the president has been the subject of hot debate after President John Mills’ persistent refusal to relocate there.
In 2009, a part of it was handed over to the Foreign Affairs Ministry temporarily after their offices were razed down by fire.
Though there has not been any official explanation to the reasons for the change of name, the inscription, The Flagstaff House is boldly displayed in Gold on the main entrance to the edifice.
According to former president Kufuor, it is a shame that the sitting president who is a Ghanaian will revert such a nice name that represents the 50th year of freedom to a colonial name that still reminds Ghanaians of slavery.
