Ex-president John Kufuor says recent demands by government functionaries for evidence of corruption allegations are vindication of his stance. Speaking to CNN, the former president said it is always incumbent on the person who alleges corruption to provide evidence so government can take necessary action. He said he was always ready to take punitive action against his appointees and even submit himself to the law if the accusers were able to provide a shred of evidence for all the allegations made in newspapers. Mr. Kufuor came under a barrage of criticisms from critics and political opponents when he asked anti-corruption campaigners to provide evidence of alleged corrupt practices by some of his appointees. The critics accused the ex-president of lacking the political will to fight corruption and to punish some of his appointees who were accused of corrupt practices. But the ex-president said it is never done anywhere for any government to go on a wild goose chase over corruption allegations put out by newspapers. He said he is happy that one of his critics has admitted on national radio that corruption allegations must be backed by evidence, but did not mention the identity of the person. “When you allege serious corruption against another you should be able to prove it,” he said. “I am happy to say that with the change, the truth in the statement I made is now borne out and Ghanaians are seeing [it],” he told CNN. He said he put in place anti-corruption laws such as the Procurement Law, Financial Administration Law, Whistle Blower Law and several others to fight corruption, yet his critics did not see anything.
