Following their demonstration Wednesday morning over what they say are negligible increments in their salaries after the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure, Prisons Officers in Kumasi have threatened to open the prison gates for the escape of inmates.
They said they will open the prison gates for the inmates to escape if their demands are not met by mid-day Wednesday. Their threat prompted the Police Buffalo Unit in Kumasi to besiege the prisons to forestall any eventuality.
This resulted in a scuffle between the Police and the Prisons Officers.
The demonstration has received sharp rebuttal from George Smith Graham, CEO of the Fair Wages Commission who said he was shocked by the Prison Officers' decision and that it is not appropriate for them to compare their situation and say they are worse off since they are still in the process of standardising the pay policy structure.
Government representatives led by Deputy Information Minister, James Agyenim-Boateng in a media briefing Wednesday said it is illegal for security officers to demonstrate and there will be an investigation by the National Security and the Ministry of Interior. Those found culpable will be dealt with.
