Health Minister Dr Benjamin Kumbuor has confirmed he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.
In several interviews with the media in Accra, Dr Kumbour said he was driving home in his VW Passat GR 4656-10 and had just gone past the Labone Senior High School Monday evening when he heard a disturbing thud on his car.
Thinking it was a stone, he wanted to stop to assess the impact only to realise that the right side of his windscreen had been perforated. Sensing danger, the minister said he sped off. He said he was sure it was a bullet that hit his car and not a stone.
Dr Kumbour who is a former Member of Parliament for Lawra/Nandom, said it was still a mystery to him that he could not find the bullet given the fact that it must have been shot from ahead of him.
He however did not rule out the possibility of the bullet coming through the right window - because the glass had been rolled down - and perforating the windscreen and going out.
The case has since been reported to the Cantonments Police, who confirmed they are investigating the matter.
This is the second time Dr Kumbour has been attacked - the first was an armed robbery attack at his residence in 2008.
Coming close on the heels of allegations that former President Rawlings is under surveillance because he was the target of a potential assassination attack, questions are being asked about why his close confidante (Dr Kumbour ) may have narrowly escaped a possible gun attack.
The Minister has been very close to the former president and was a confidante until his appointment as Deputy Minister and later Minister of Health.
