Watching the CCTV footage of the Ablekuma bullion van robbery attack in which the robber killed the police officer in cold blood, I have a few questions:
- Why did the driver open his door and run away from the van, leaving his door open, thus exposing the police officer to attack even from the driver's side? The investigators must have some questions for the driver.
- Is the bullion van armoured and bulletproof? If so, the driver would have known it was safer to be in the vehicle than to run away from it, leaving the door ajar.
- Why was the door to the passenger side not locked, making it so easy for the robber to open and shoot the police officer at close range?
- Why was the police officer not wearing a bulletproof vest and a safety helmet?
A few years ago I participated in a bidding process when a particular bank was procuring bullion vans. We had offered not only bulletproof bullion vans but also bulletproof vests for the drivers, bank staff and escorting security personnel.
Somebody at the Bank of Ghana and Ghana Police Service must answer tough questions as to why these incidents continue to happen so blatantly, even after the BoG and the Police Service gave deadlines for all financial institutions to acquire proper bullion vans (not converted pickups!).
Another police officer bites the dust in the line of duty. Expressing condolences is not enough. The appropriate authorities must implement the measures everyone knows will provide the needed security for all persons involved in the sector. One more needless death is one too many!
