Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior, George Arthur has indicated plans to invite Minister for the Interior and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to answer questions on security in Ashanti region.
The region has been a target of criminals in recent times. Recently police found 130 cartridges in an abandoned house in Kumasi, the regional capital, during a search of a building belonging to suspects of a motor bicycle theft.
Mr. George Arthur, who is also Amenfi the Central MP, told Joy News several invitations have been extended to the Minister, Mr Kwesi Awhoi, and the IGP, Mr Mohammed Alhassan, but they could not honour any of them.
Mr. Arthur was optimistic the two gentlemen will appear before the Committee before the Supreme Court rules on the 2012 election petition, which is likely to be done in August.
Mr. Arthur added that other activities of the security agencies have also been suspended to concentrate on a national security plan before the Supreme Court judgment.
The West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) in its latest report on the state of security in Ghana, listed the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions as the most volatile areas in the country and prone to violent reactions to the election petition.
According to the report "general citizenry is anxious and uncertain about the stability of the country when the Supreme Court announces its judgement regarding the presidential election petition led by party leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)".
The report also stated "Conflicts and Political Analysts are of the opinion there might emerge pockets of violence some of which may be between factions of the many unresolved conflicts in the country".
On July 19, 2013 the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) spearheaded the National Peace Summit to sensitise the public on need to keep the peace in the country post Supreme Court ruling.
Former Presidents John Rawlings and John Kufuor, as well as other key statesmen gave various addresses on the theme of the summit: Justice, Peace and Reforms will strengthen Ghana.
