Private legal practitioner Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu has called on Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to assert stronger control over the rising chaos in Parliament, warning that repeated breaches of parliamentary decorum could tarnish his legacy.
Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile programme, Mr Adawudu praised the Speaker for his extensive knowledge and experience in handling parliamentary affairs, noting that his credentials have earned respect both in Ghana and internationally.
However, he argued that the Speaker has become too relaxed in the eyes of the public, allowing unruly behaviour to persist unchecked.
“Everybody respects the Speaker for the depth of his knowledge and his experience in handling Parliament,” Mr Adawudu said. “But I think that he has relaxed in the eyes of the public. He should not end on a bad note.”
He warned that under the current leadership, multiple infractions have occurred within Parliament with no meaningful action taken, a situation he believes will not reflect well in history.
The call comes after chaotic scenes in Parliament on Tuesday, when members of the Minority Caucus abandoned their seats and surged into the centre of the chamber during heated exchanges over the declaration of the Kpandai parliamentary seat as vacant.
The incident briefly halted proceedings and followed repeated warnings from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who had dismissed the Minority’s protests.
Mr Adawudu emphasised that firm action from the Speaker, including sanctions for unparliamentary behaviour, is essential to maintain the dignity of Parliament and uphold public confidence in Ghana’s legislative processes.
