A private legal practitioner, Lawyer Kwame Akuffo has described the demolishing of the University of Ghana tollbooth by the national security as improper and a slap against the laws of the country.
According to Mr. Akuffo, the national security acted in contravention of the law, as the roles assigned it under the act establishing the agency has nothing to do with demolishing structures.
Mr. Akuffo was therefore of the opinion that the national security should have gone for a court order granting authority to demolish the said property and not to take the law into its own hands.
The private legal practitioner was commenting on Joy News, Thursday, on the legal implications of the action taken by the national security in the wake of the demolishing exercise on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the University has resolved to drag the National Security Coordinator, Colonel Larry Gbevlo Lartey to court for unlawfully demolishing a tollbooth and security post on the university premises.
The decision of the University was arrived at in a meeting held yesterday, February 19, by the Academic Board of the university. The board directed management of the university to take the legal action against the demolishing of its property without seeking permission to do so.
The demolishing of the booth at the main entrance of the university by officials of the national security for what they described as causing unnecessary traffic on the main road in front of the university angered the university authorities.
The university therefore described the demolishing as arbitrary, unconstitutional, unlawful, and a direct attack on academic freedom as well as the democratic principles of the country.
