Some students of the University of Ghana who were expected to start their end of semester examinations Saturday morning, were unable to do so after their exams halls were shit-bombed.
Authorities realised the halls they had prepared and secured under locks for the examination had been broken into, and the floors and furniture smeared with excrement.
Part of the Central Cafeteria, the new ‘N’ Block and the Jones Quartey building which were affected were being cleaned up and disinfected.
Joy News correspondent Sammy Darko who reported the incident said the stench from the foul deposits was so bad students writing their papers in adjoining halls had to clutch their noses with tissues while others complained bitterly.
Another paper was due at 11am but there were no signs the affected students would be taking part.
The desecration campaign comes in the wake of mounting unrest on the campus following a standoff between a section of students and authorities over the implementation of a new accommodation policy.
The new policy provides residential accommodation on campus only for first year students, while all other continuing students will have to find their own accommodation outside campus.
After a mass demonstration last week to object to the policy, a section of the students opposed to the policy had earlier vowed to disrupt the examination to ensure that the academic year does not end at all.
On Thursday, a group calling itself Militant African Youth Against Neo-colonialism wrote a letter to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Clifford Tagoe threatening to use acid attacks against him and his family, as well as other members of the university community.
The police on Friday arrested a former student of the University, Lord Hammah, who still resides on campus to help in investigations into the source of letter.
The police also raided the room of a former JCR President, Benjamin Brentuo Akyena and took away a computer and other accessories on suspicion he might be connected with the letter and the issuance of threats on the campus.
There was calm however on campus while police maintained a heavy presence.
