A student of the University of Ghana, Legon, last week displayed admirable bravery when he confronted two armed robbers welding a gun and a cutlass, and succeeded in taking the gun from them.
The student overpowered the robbers, believed to be in a gang that operates at the university and its environs in a dawn confrontation.
The Legon District Police Commander, DSP Michael Teku, told the Times that the student was studying behind his hall at about 3.am on the day of the confrontation when the two robbers attacked him. They held a locally manufactured pistol and a cutlass at him and demanded that he surrender his mobile phone.
Mr. Teku said the student shouted for help but as nobody came to his aid, he single-handedly struggled with them and in the process, one of them hit him on the head with the pistol but he managed to take the gun compelling the two attackers to take to their heels.
A report was consequently made to the police after which Mr. Teku advised students of the university to avoid walking in dark and isolated places in order not to be attacked by criminals.
The University community has in recent times experienced increased incidents of gun-point robberies with three attacks occurring within a three-week period.
One lecturer was attacked in his bungalow and the wife shot, a student was shot at his hall and four other students robbed by armed masked men.
The students subsequently staged a demonstration on February 15, 2007 and called for tighter security measures.
The University authority therefore strengthened the security force on campus and employed highly experience security personnel and designed new security routines on campus.
