The President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, has urged the various religious faiths to maintain the prevailing peaceful co-existence among them and reject any temptation of engaging in religious strifes as being experience in many countries. He said the peaceful coexistence among followers of the two major religions, Muslims and Christians, had maintained peace and stability in the country, to the extent that they participated in the activities of each other. President Mahama made the call Sunday at the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer at the Independence Square in Accra. Eidu-ul-Fitr is celebrated after the 29 or 30 days of fasting in the month of Ramadan. According to the Islamic teachings, all Muslims who observe the fast and pray on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr will have their sins forgiven. President Mahama said the lack of tolerance among the various religious groups in other countries was the cause of conflict in those countries. That, he said, was because when people were prevented from practicising their religion they would feel aggrieved and this would consequently, lead to conflict. However, President Mahama said, God's favour was upon Ghana as the religious leaders respected and tolerated each other. For instance, he said, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, prayed for the soul of the late President John Evans Mills at a Christian service. Also, he said, when the Ameer and Missionary in charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, fell sick at the burial of President J.E.A.Mills and was being taken to the 37 Military Hospital, Archbishop Palmer Buckle, joined the ambulance to accompany him to the hospital. President Mahama said the basic principle among all religions was love, and stressed the need for Ghanaians to jealously guard the love among them. He urged Muslims to extend the virtues of love, patience and tolerance that they had acquired in the month of Ramadan to the other months. The President cautioned Muslim youth against allowing themselves to be engaged by selfish politicians as thugs to visit mayhem on their perceived political opponents. He affirmed his commitment to ensuring a peaceful, fair and transparent election this year. He urged Muslims to pay their Hajj fares on time to avoid any delays and disappointments. He announced that prospective pilgrims from the three regions of the north would be camped at Tamale and transported to Accra to catch their flights for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and indicated that another Hajj camp had been secured behind the airport. Sheikh Sharubutu for his part, stressed the need for Ghanaians to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after this year's elections. He said the only way Ghanaians could show gratitude to God for his mercies on the country, was to protect the peace in the country. He prayed to God to empower President Mahama to continue with the good work started by the late President Mills.
