After hours of deliberations by a joint Regional Security Council technical committee on the report of the roadmap on the land boundary dispute between Janga and Wasipe Traditional areas on Lukula in the North Gonja District, the committee has agreed to allow the two overlords, Nayiri and Yagbonwura to collectively offer their inputs.

As part of the decision, both Wasipe and Janga traditional areas will also be in attendance to contribute their quota for a resolution on Lukula.

It would be recalled that before the creation of the two regions under the current government, the two areas lived peacefully without a boundary or land dispute, but since 2019, there have been countless attacks led by two traditional areas [Janga and Wasipe], leading to several casualties including human lives.

As a result, there have been efforts by the Regional Security Councils of the two regions to bring an end to the conflict.

The sitting was held on a neutral ground in Tamale in the Northern Region with the two Regional Ministers, Saeed Muhazu Jibril from Savannah and Yidana Zackaria from North East Regions leading the discussions.

Members from the sides include all heads of security commands, national security officials, and officers of the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO.

Following the meeting, the two REGSEC Chairmen told JoyNews that it was a very fruitful discussion that now requires the inputs of Nayiri and Yagbonwura in the coming weeks.

"Yes, we came to discuss the way forward for the Lukula and we had a lot of discussions about the roadmap bringing peace to that community. So, I think so far, so good. The meeting will continue and in that, we (Joint REGSEC) are going to proceed to another level that's by bringing the two overlords and the two traditional areas together to make sure that we put certain conditions in place then, we invite the National Peace Council who are going to be the main mediators between the two traditional areas, that's the Mamprugu and Gonja", Mr. Saeed Muhazu Jibril indicated.

The Regional Minister said calm has since been restored to Lukula, and that those who fled have also returned to continue with their normal daily activities.

North East Regional Minister, Yidana Zakaria also expressed his satisfaction, and appealed to both sides of the divide to listen to the statements issued by Nayiri and Yagbonwura, and allow peace to prevail because they are one people with a common destiny.

"The two REGSECs constituted a joint technical committee to do some work. They did and submitted the report. So, with the issues that have come out, I'm pretty sure that's the way to proceed and make sure that we find solutions to that area."

"I'm making a passionate appeal to the people in the Lukula area to continue to live in peace. Nothing should divide us, Gonjas and Mamprusis, we are one people with one common destiny. They have lived together in that area for over a century, and this is not the time to have issues", Mr. Yidana Zakaria appealed.

Meanwhile, June 22, 2023, has been set for the next meeting between the two overlords and traditional areas.
