Some unscrupulous traders who ply their business in consumable goods such as biscuits and soft drinks across the various markets in the capital are selling to the unsuspecting public food items that could cause food poisoning. The Today newspaper has reported that some traders change expiry dates on already expired products and repackage them for the market. The paper discovered that the nefarious practice is fast gaining grounds in the capital.Meanwhile, the Food and Drugs Board (FDB) has mounted a search for the owner of a large consignment of Rama Glucose biscuits infested with life maggots.About 600 boxes of the biscuit have been intercepted by the Board during its random market checks. The boxes containing the biscuits were neatly packaged, re-sealed and displayed in front of a shopping mall at the CMB Markets in Accra. The Head of the Food Inspectorate Division at the FDB, Ebenezer Kofi Essel, told Citi News that “we have identified an importer with that particular brand and the facility has currently been closed up. ”“We are still investigating because we understand that particular warehouse was flooded during the recent floods and so we suspect the flood water might have entered the warehouse and that is where the problem started from,” he explained.“It is alleged that because they wanted to salvage the biscuits, they sold them off, so it is not that maggot infested biscuits got into the country and infiltrated the market. ”
