President John Mahama has directed the Ministry of Local Government to initiate processes to upgrade the Ho and Hohoe Municipalities into Metropolitan Assemblies, as part of broader efforts to promote structured urban development across the country.
The President made the announcement on Wednesday, December 17, during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Oxygen City housing project in Ho in the Volta Region.
According to him, the decision follows the identification of Ho and Hohoe as urban centres whose growth now warrants metropolitan status.
“I have directed the Ministry of Local Government to put into process the arrangements to upgrade Ho into a Metropolitan Assembly. Ho and Hohoe have been identified. Hohoe is also going to be a Metropolitan Assembly,” President Mahama stated.
He added that the government will, in due course, announce other districts that are set to be elevated to municipal status.
“There are other districts that are going to be upgraded to municipal status, and it will be announced in due course,” he said, assuring residents of the government’s commitment to planned and sustainable urban expansion.
President Mahama further stated that the upgrades form part of the Reset Agenda to create an enabling environment for transparent and orderly urban development.
He outlined key measures the government intends to pursue, including reforms in housing finance, strengthened land administration systems, the promotion of credible public-private partnerships, and strategic investments in infrastructure.
“Let me assure you that government remains firmly committed to creating the enabling environment that is necessary for planned, transparent, and sustainable urban development,” he added.
