The district pastor of the Boso Presbyterian Church of Ghana in the Asuogyaman district of the Eastern region, Rev. Ntim Manteaw has expressed worry over the mass failure in Mathematics and Science among Junior High School students in their final exams.
According to the Rev Minister, many JHS graduates are unable to gain admission to further their education in the Senior High Schools each year because of failures in Mathematics and Science in the Basic Education Certificate Examination [BECE].
He said as a result of this many young boys and girls find themselves on the streets selling dog chains, pure water and getting involved in all sorts of social vices in the society.
The situation, according to him, if not checked could undermine Ghana's future since her future leaders have lost direction.
Rev Ntim Manteaw was speaking at the launch of a five-day Mathematical Concept Building and Application seminar organized by Mrs. Veronica Ntim Manteaw (his wife) for 60 JHS students selected from Anum and Boso in the district.
Mrs. Veronica Ntim Manteaw, a Mathematician, noted that Mathematics is a complete subject that stretches into all other vocations and occupations but most students seem not to like it because of the way it is being taught. Another hindrance, is a negative mindset against the subject.
According to her, the mindset of many students is that when you are not aspiring to become an accountant or a doctor, then you do not need to study Mathematics or take the course seriously.
But she said everyone employs Mathematics in various activities and disciplines including banking, carpentry, tailoring, surveying and masonry.
She said the method of teaching Mathematics in schools does not make it practical for the understanding of students.
The Mathematics seminar, she said, was aimed at bringing on board resource persons like renowned tailors, hairdressers, masons, carpenters, surveyors and other artisans to teach the children how they apply Mathematics in their everyday life and to eliminate the Mathematics phobia in the children.
The General Manger of UNICREDIT and a native of Anum, Mr. Stephen Ameyaw, Guest Speaker, called for the creation of conducive atmospheres to enhance the teaching and learning of Mathematics.
He noted that the teaching of Mathematics should be made as practical as possible to enable the learner realize the usefulness of the subject in everyday life.
