The Methodist University College of Ghana (MUCG) is taking practical steps to help stem the tide of alcoholism, drug abuse and indecent dressing among students in the country. To commit its students to those steps, all fresh students at this year's matriculation ceremony were made to swear oaths to be of good behaviour and never to indulge in those listed vices. Addressing the students and invited guests at its eighth matriculation ceremony on the school's campus at Dansoman, the Principal of the college, the Very Rev. Prof S.K. Adjepong stressed the dress code and noted that "male students should not go barefooted or without shirts when in public places such as the classrooms, the library or the cafeteria, while the skirts worn by female students must be long enough to cover their knees". He added that transparent and tight-fitting blouses and sweaters were forbidden. The Very Rev. Prof Adjepong asked the students to let discipline be their watchword and morality their guiding principle in their pursuit of academic excellence. He also stressed the need for them to spend more time in the library to enrich their knowledge. "Our teaching methodologies are designed to develop the ability for critical thinking which will help you to find practical solutions to problems in your community, our nation and the world at large," he noted. This year, 1,004 fresh students were enrolled for the various programmes of study on the Dansoman and Tema campuses for day and evening programmes, raising the student population to 3,227. The university was established by the Methodist Church, Ghana in 2000 with an initial student population of 80. It currently has four faculties - Business Administration, Social Studies, General Studies and Agriculture. The National Accreditation Board (NAB) granted the university accreditation to run programmes in Bachelor of Science (BSc), General Agriculture, Diploma in Horticulture, Bachelor of Administration (B.A.), French and Masters in Business Administration (MBA).
