The Minority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has asked the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service to stop interfering in the investigations of the former Speaker of Parliament, Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi Huges. He told Joy News the move by the CID is premature and asked that the Parliamentary Service Board investigating the matter be allowed to exhaust its probe into the matter before the state takes over. “My worry is (that) Parliament is an arm of government, judiciary is an arm of government and I thought that if anything has gone wrong and Parliament, as an institution, has set up an enquiry into it and the enquiry has not ended and maybe the police enter into the fray, I think it would be a bit premature.” Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu also told host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, on Tuesday that Parliamentarians have not "thrown up their hands in the air that they are incapable" of handling the matter. Neither, he said, has the ex-speaker proven “intransigent” and has not refused to cooperate with them to warrant a takeover by police. “Parliament’s own decision or conclusion on the matter may not be the finality, so we may arrive at a decision, and further to that decision, some further actions could to be taken… “Let nobody hijack it and let it appear that parliament is incapable of handling the matter. That is my worry; and I think that it would be eroding the integrity and independence of parliament.” Mr Sekyi Hughes was over the weekend invited by the CID to ostensibly explain why he unlawfully took away state property upon his retirement from office. The Parliamentary Service Board is expected to convene an emergency meeting today to take a final decision on the matter. This follows his (ex-Speaker’s) response to the findings of the ad hoc committee investigating the matter, in which he has claimed he only took what had been granted him by a memo submitted to the House by the Clerk of Parliament. Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu conceded that the Service Board erred in coming out with its findings on the matter without any input from former Speaker Sekyi Huges. “What we should have done was to have invited him on the onset; maybe, formerly write to him that maybe after you presented your keys to us, officers went there and these items were not in place, what is your response.” Meanwhile some Members of Parliament and the ruling party are calling on government to prosecute Ebenezer Sekyi Hughes. In a related development Members of Parliament would resume duty in the House today after almost two months break.
