The father of Mohbad, Joseph Aloba, has finally opened up on the death of his son and given reasons why the late artiste was buried less than 24 hours after his death.
In an interview with BBC Yoruba, Mr Aloba, recounting events on September 12, said that his son died at about 3:00 p.m. that day. However, he was not informed right away.
He stated that he met a crowd at Mobad’s home when he visited at 10 p.m.
Mr Aloba said they tried to make a report at the police station and were denied. When they tried to take Mohbad to the mortuary, he noted that there was no space.
The bereaved father said he could not bear the sight of his lifeless son in the confines of their home. This, he said, played a role in their decision to bury him as early as they did.
Mr Aloba apologised for his actions, stating that although his decision has had people speculating about what he may or may not know about Mohbad's death, no one loves his son more than he does.
Mohbad, 27, passed away on Tuesday, 12th September and was buried the following day in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Several controversies and conspiracy theories have trailed Mohbad’s death. The CEO of the singer’s former label Marlian Records, Naira Marley, and his associate Sam Larry denied allegations suggesting their involvement in the singer’s death.
However, they and one other suspect, Primeboy, are in police custody pending investigations.
Earlier, Mohbad’s father had called for people to not place blame on Naira Marley for his son’s death, stating that he may be innocent of the allegations.
He emphasised that while his son faced challenges, people cannot definitively attribute his troubles to Naira Marley. Shortly after, a video of Mr Aloba begging Naira Marley to forgive his son surfaced online.
But, in the interview with BBC Yoruba, Mr Aloba said he did not know he was being recorded.
Talking about his encounter with Naira Marley, Mohbad’s father said that that was the first time he had visited the Marlian Records CEO’s home. He noted that seeing his son eat with Naira Marley gave him a good feeling about the musician.
But, Mohbad warned his father that Naira Marley was not as good as he had portrayed, Mr Aloba said. “When I went to Naira’s room to beg him to forgive my son whatever he might have done, I didn’t know he was recording me.”
He also alleged that Marley’s associate Sam Larry beat his son but Mohbad did not report the issue to the police for fear of his life.
“Since then he had always been living with fear. He was beaten again during his video shoot with Zlatan. I need justice for him,” he added.
