MoMo vendor paralysed after motorcycle accident

On September 8, last year when JoyNews visited the Dodi-Papase community to speak to residents about their expectations going into the December 2020 elections, Prince was one of those who volunteered to speak.

He said among other things that “Some of us have completed senior high school (SHS) for about five years now but I am yet to get employed. I am just managing in the village and sitting under this umbrella. I am a mobile money and credit card vendor."

Prince, according to the mother started operating as a mobile money centre after completing his SHS education over three years ago to save some money to continue his education.

The 22-year-old is currently on admission at the Greater Accra regional hospital after a motorcycle he was travelling on from Kadjebi to Dodi-Papase had its front tyre burst.

The accident, which occurred two weeks ago, left Prince with a spine injury and a broken rib. He is paralyzed from the waist down to his feet. He is unable to do anything for himself except the daily support from his mother. He requires emergency surgery that would cost him over ¢40,000.

Raising this amount has been difficult for the family over the past couple of weeks. Prince’s mother, Annie Deku, says she does not have the financial muscle to pay for it.

“My son had a terrible accident on March 21, and I sent him to the Dodi-Papase hospital but we were referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital but officials there say there was no bed.

"We have found a space at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital but the amount required for the surgery is ¢40,000 and I do not have that amount.

"Prince was the one looking after me until now and the little he has been used on immediate medications. I am appealing to Ghanaians for their support for him to get well. He has lost his father for some years now and I am just appealing for your support,” the single mother said.

His aunt who worried about his condition is also calling for public support in terms of finances for her nephew to get the needed health care.

“The doctors are saying he has a problem with his spine and ribs. He cannot move any part of his body. As a family, we are trying to raise so much money and we are calling on kind-hearted individuals to come to our aid," she pleaded.
