More than 3,000 cholera cases have so far been recorded in the Greater Accra region alone since July. Sixteen deaths have also been recorded in just one week.
Joy News’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo, who visited the La General Hospital Tuesday, said 23 cases were recorded last night alone and between Saturday and Monday, 74 new cases were received.
He added since the beginning of the cholera outbreak in July, this year, a total of 604 cases and eight deaths have been recorded at that hospital, out of which three died just last week.
Joseph continued that the facility was over stretched with handling the increasing cholera cases.
The cholera unit at the infirmary, he indicated, was originally designed to cater for 13 patients but it now receives far more than the approved number.
He observed patients were being treated on benches and in chairs.
At the Osu Korle Klottey area where the Ridge Hospital and the Adabraka Polyclinic are located, a total of 426 cases were recorded in July and in the early days of August, 202 cases have been chronicled.
A Physician Assistant, Samuel Nkrumah Asamoah told Joseph that even though the hospital staffs were prepared to manage the cases, they had no space to admit the patients.
Some patients spoken to expressed frustrations at the harsh conditions at the hospital.
Doctors are equally worried about the situation and have advised the public to continue practicing personal hygiene while eating very hot foods.
