Hosts Morocco joined Tunisia in securing qualification for the semi-finals of the CAF U-17 Championship after beating Botswana 3-0 on Tuesday in Casablanca.
The two North African sides will meet on Friday to decided first and second in Group A while Botswana and Gabon will play each other for pride before heading home.
A brace from inform striker Bnou Marzouk in each half sent the Baby Zebras of Botswana packing and the host celebrating achieving their target a qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup as set out by coach Abdellah Idrissi.
Morocco were the better side throughout the match controlling the pace and tempo of the game. Early pressure on Kgosipula’s goal foretold a bust night for the Zebras’ keeper as captain Jaadi went close on 4 and 7th minutes.
The Atlas Cubs went in front on 17th minute when a deflected clearance in the Botswana box fell kindly to Marzouk and he collected it before firing past Kgosipula for the opener.
More attacks on Zebras goal followed and midfielder Sakhi who was impressive all night beat a couple of defenders but the keeper stood firm beating back into play Sakhi’s shot.
Botswana struggled to get hold of the ball and found themselves expending energy chasing possession most of the time. An injury induced substitution brought in Legopelo and he managed to stretch the Moroccan defence allowing his team mates to move up and for a period Botswana didn’t let Morocco have it its own way.
The goal scoring chances were few and far between for the Southern Africans though and the first half finished 1-0 in favour of Morocco.
Whatever hope Botswana had of staging a comeback evaporated two minutes after resumption when they conceded a second goal. Some good play from the right wing ended up with a pass to Sakhi on the edge of the box.
His shot came off the keeper who seems to have stopped it but it bounced off him into the back of the net. The second goal while boosting Morocco took the stuffing out of the Zebras whose new target looked like keeping the e score line low.
In the 70th minute Sakhi’s beautiful curling shot struck the upright as Morocco’s dominance continued. The Zebra thought they had pulled back a goal but the shot was taken from an off-side position.
A couple more long rang shots on Belkouch’s goal did not trouble him that much. Marzouk made it 3-0 in the 81st minute when he ran onto a delightful through ball by substitute Sabbar and dummied the keeper before scoring into an empty net and the Atlas Cubs were in heaven.
