A Member of Parliament (MP) on Friday called on school authorities to wake up to the task of monitoring and supervising the activities of students' associations, in order to weed out the negative practices creeping into the campuses. Professor Samuel Amoako, New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Abuakwa North who made the call said lesbianism, homosexual habits and other practices such as occultism coupled with high-tech crime known as "sakawa" had taken over some of the schools indicating a breakdown of discipline in Ghanaian educational institutions. Prof. Amoako, who was making a statement on challenges facing students in schools, on the floor of Parliament, said: "The indiscipline on our roads, in our offices, in our factories and other work places, and even on our farms is a mirror of the indiscipline in our schools." "The attitudes of adults are difficult to change, but we can and should change the attitude of our young ones." The MP also touched on teacher indiscipline and said sexual malpractices between teachers and students, the use of students and pupils to run errands for teachers during school hours and examination malpractices were issues that needed to be addressed in order to build a strong nation. “Madam Speaker, I want to call on all parents, teachers, the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service as well as the entire Ghanaian public to instill some discipline into the fabric of our society, especially into our students, so that we can ensure a promising future for our nation." Some MPs who contributed to the statement said parents had also shirked the responsibility of nurturing and bringing up their wards to be good citizens of the country. Earlier, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Joe Gidisu, who was in the House to respond to questions, said the Apedwa-Kukurantumi road in the Eastern Region was an important link, which could be used as a diversion in case of an emergency on the Accra-Kumasi road is being considered for reconstruction in the medium to long term plan of the Ministry starting from 2012.
