The MTN Ghana Foundation has commissioned its second ICT Centre of Learning at Nyinahin in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti region. The mobile telecom company is partnering with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to provide 10 ICT Centres in all ten regions of the country. Chief Executive Officer of MTN, Michael Ikpoki, believes the ICT Center will unlock opportunities for young people, students and entrepreneurs within the community to access knowledge to enrich their lives. He says the company is committed to providing less endowed communities with information communication technologies because “we believe this is the key to development; this is the key to the progress of communities and individuals wherever they live”. The commissioning of the ICT Centre also forms part of activities commemorating the maiden edition of the AshantiFEST, a festival of socio-economic activities. According to Mr. Ikpoki, the event is for MTN to connect with its customers in the Ashanti region, in appreciation of their patronage of MTN products and services. The people of Nyinahin, are excited at the establishment of the ICT Centre of Learning in the community. Students and teachers of the predominately farming community who spoke to Luv Fm are already counting the benefits of the facility to teaching and learning. UNDP Country Director, Kamil Kamaludeen encouraged the community to see the centre as prime resource. He emphasized that the facility “will educate our youth, it will provide opportunities for business people to advance information about their businesses, to reach out to potential markets, to connect with partners, to connect with financial resources and to sharpen their products and services”. The Member of Parliament for the area, Isaac Asiamah and Nyinahinhene, Nana Amampene Boateng Twum II, cautioned against abuse of the facility, especially for illegal activities such as internet fraud.
