The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) now has a substantive President in the person of Bessa Simons.
Bessa won the MUSIGA national elections which took place on October 10, 2023 across the various regions of the country with 324 votes.
He beat his contender Ras Caleb Appiah-Levi who polled 66 votes.
Bessa, until the election, had been acting as the President of MUSIGA since Bice Osei Kuffour left office in 2019.
Other people who won national executive positions in the union are Reverend Thomas Yawson Yawson (1st Vice President), Abena Ruthy - (2nd Vice President), S. K. Agyemang (General Secretary), Reverend Edusa Eyison (National Treasurer), Reverend Gifty Ghansah (National Welfare Officer) and Chizzy Wailer (National Organizer).
The MUSIGA elections had suffered postponements for five times after the expiration of Obour’s tenure in 2019.
The latest postponement was occasioned by a court injunction secured by two members of the union. It was the fifth time MUSIGA had postponed its elections since 2019.
In a writ of summons dated August 7, 2023, the Plaintiffs, Doe Kwablah Seyram Nyamedi and and Frederick Van Dyck, stated that the elections could not be held because accounts had not been rendered for the past years.
The writ also mentioned the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), former MUSIGA President Bice ‘Obour’ Osei Kuffour as Defendants.
The third defendant was the Electoral Commission of Ghana, which had been tasked to organise the elections.
However, an Accra High Court in August dismissed the injunction, explaining that the plaintiffs had not proven they would suffer "irreparable harm" if the elections were held.
They were therefore asked to pay 10,000 cedis damages to the union.
The new MUSIGA administration is expected to change the fortunes the union and make it more attractive to a lot of musicians in the country.
