The Member of Parliament for Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, P.C. Appiah-Ofori, has declared that persons in the NPP pushing him to come out with “documents” to prove his bribery allegations against some NPP legislators should hold their fire because the party could “collapse” if he lets the whole cat out of the bag.
Mr Appiah-Ofori, who has widely been described as an anti-corruption campaigner, said this when he reacted to a Daily Guide report that he had backtracked on his allegation that “NPP MPs from 2005 to 2009 had collected $5000” to approve Vodafone’s acquisition of 70% share of state-owned Ghana Telecom.
The MP’s comments suggested he had a bagful of secrets about the biggest opposition party which he has since withheld.
In his interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr Appiah-Ofori said certain individuals within the NPP were putting pressure on him to substantiate the allegation which has for some now torched off a huge loathing for him in his own party.
“There is a pressure group within the party [which wants] me to come with documents to prove…if I come out…this party will collapse irretrievably,” he told Super Morning Show host Kodwo Oppong-Nkrumah.
Mr Appiah-Ofori said the disciplinary committee of the party erred in a letter to him to clarify the allegations he had made against the MPs.
“I’ve not in any way said that NPP MPs collected GH¢5,000. I said GH¢5,000. There is a difference between $5000 and GH¢5000,” he said, emphasizing that he still stood by his allegations against his colleagues.
He stressed that the disciplinary committee of the party must ensure that it gets its facts right before he is called upon to appear before it.
“You don’t make an allegation…for me to come and defend myself which is not correct. Those who made the allegations should come out with the correct facts so that you can call on me to come and defend myself,” he said.
Mr Appiah Ofori said he would react appropriately if the party writes to him, stating the facts.
But responding to the issues, chairman of the disciplinary committee of the NPP, Mr Samuel Odoi-Sykes said Mr Appiah-Ofori is displaying sheer cowardice.
"The man is running away, there are people who do that; they are all cowards," he told Joy News' Sammy Darko.
"We have a lot of cowards in our politics at this time; he gets on [and] he wants to be a hero and he makes an allegation [which] he can't substantiate," he said.
