Ghanaian spiritual figures the Mystic Twins paid homage to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the historic Akwasidae USA celebration.
In a historic display of heritage, culture and royal grandeur, thousands gathered at Bowie State University’s Bulldog Stadium on Sunday, 30 August 2026, to celebrate the Grand Akwasidae USA.
Presided over by the King of the Asante Kingdom, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the occasion brought together traditional rulers, members of the Ghanaian diaspora and prominent international dignitaries on American soil. The sixth Akwasidae Festival held in the United States was part of the celebration at Bowie State University in Maryland.
Among the prominent cultural figures in attendance were Ghana’s celebrated Mystic Twins, whose presence added a distinctive spiritual and traditional allure to the royal festivities.
The Akwasidae Festival, traditionally held every six weeks at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, serves as a sacred occasion for honouring ancestors, reaffirming loyalty to traditional authority and celebrating the soul of Asanteman.
The sixth edition held in the United States served as the grand finale of the Millennium Excellence Week America 2026. Bowie State University was transformed into a sea of vibrant Kente cloth, golden ornaments and massive ceremonial umbrellas. The air echoed with the rhythmic sounds of fontomfrom drums, traditional horns and performances by Bowie State’s Symphony of Soul marching band.
Governor Wes Moore highlighted the deep significance of bringing such a cherished tradition to Maryland, marking the beginning of African Heritage Month alongside Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Maryland legislation signed in 2026 provides for September to be observed annually as African Heritage Month.
For the Ghanaian diaspora, the arrival of Otumfuo and traditional figures like the Mystic Twins offered a rare bridge between generations, allowing young African-Americans and foreign-born Ghanaians to connect directly with centuries-old Akan heritage.
The historic durbar ended with royal blessings, traditional dance and a renewed commitment to preserving Ghanaian culture across continents.
The Akwasidae Festival is one of the most sacred, historical and culturally significant celebrations of the Asante Kingdom in Ghana. Observed on a Sunday once every six weeks according to the 42-day Akan traditional calendar, it serves as a living bridge connecting the physical world with the ancestral realm.
Ghana’s Mystic Twins, Nana Akwasi Agyemang Panyin (McMaine) and Nana Akwasi Agyemang Kakra (McKenzie), are prominent spiritual teachers, media personalities and cultural figures who advocate for African indigenous wisdom, mysticism and spiritual education.
Born in Manhyia, Kumasi, they identify as “last-born princes” of the Denkyira Kingdom, tying their public platform to traditional royal lineage and ancestral heritage.
