The National Blood Transfusion Service is encouraging voluntary blood donors especially second-cycle students to commit themselves more to the cause of giving blood to save lives.
Under a special programme dubbed Club 25, the bank is targeting each member of a donor club to donate blood 25 times before age 25.
The World Blood Day is celebrated globally to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and also appreciate donors.
This year’s celebration is under the theme ‘Every Blood Donor is a Hero’.
The Club 25 programme is aimed at encouraging more young people at low risk of transmitting infection to donate blood.
Voluntary blood donors constitute about 30 per cent of donors in Ghana.
Luv FM and Nhyira FM in Kumasi continue to spearhead voluntary blood donation campaigns which they have done for over a decade.
At least, 70 patients need blood daily to survive at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital alone.
Voluntary blood donors contribute 70 per cent of blood stock.
Health officials are exploring ways to transform family replacement donors into regular and active voluntary donors.
Head of Transfusion Unit at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr. Shirley Owusu-Ofori believes regular voluntary donation will help maintain stock at the various banks.
Dr. Owusu-Ofori also disabuses public perception blood donation has negative implication on the health of donors.
