The National House of Chiefs has commended stakeholders involved in the 2012 elections, including local and foreign observers, for their various roles in making the process peaceful and successful. The House expressed particular excitement at the fact that observers called the exercise an example worthy of emulation by the rest of the African continent. The comments come from a statement issued by Wulugu Naba Pugansoa, President of the House, who is known in private life as Professor John S. Nabila. The statement, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said that developments since the Electoral Commission declared John Mahama president have created a tense situation in the country that has left the Chiefs worried about national peace and unity. To this end, the National House of Chiefs urged all political parties concerned to resolve outstanding electoral disputes peacefully through established the constitutional and legal channels in an atmosphere free of recrimination, violence and intimidation. The Chiefs appealed to Ghanaians and to the leadership of the political parties to put “Ghana First” and to behave positively to ensure that the country’s good name as “a beacon of hope for democracy in Africa” is not tarnished.
