The discovery of official Bank of Ghana (BoG) cash boxes at the centre of a major counterfeiting operation in Sarpeiman in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region has sparked significant alarm over possible regulatory failures and the robustness of Ghana’s financial security systems.
The incident has drawn public attention to the disturbing possibility of insider involvement in what is now being described as one of the most elaborate criminal setups uncovered in recent years.
During an exclusive site inspection, Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, confirmed that the money boxes recovered from the scene were authentic Bank of Ghana property.
“Authorities have verified that these boxes are genuine,” he disclosed, heightening concerns about how state-sanctioned financial assets found their way into the hands of a covert criminal network.
The operation, which was uncovered in February, had been running behind a front disguised as a modest battery-charging shop in an abandoned structure.
The elderly man operating the front, known locally as the “Battery Doctor,” is believed to have served as a cover for the real activities—namely, the mass production of counterfeit currency and fake gold bars.
Ten 40-foot containers filled with forged Ghana cedis, US dollar notes, and gold-plated metals were seized.
Two more containers believed to be linked to the operation were reportedly moved shortly before the security raid.
Investigators are currently pursuing a man known only as “Alhaji,” who is suspected to be the mastermind behind the operation.
Mr Jakpa revealed that solid evidence connects him to the Sapeiman crime scene and suggests ties to a broader network involved in financial crimes.
“Alhaji is a central figure in this syndicate, and efforts are underway to bring him to justice,” he stated.
