Eastern Region chairman of the National Democratic Congress has apologized for pouring scorn on former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings over her ambition to become the flag-bearer of the party.
Julious Debrah’s objection to Konadu’s campaign bid is no secret but in the most dramatic fashion, the Eastern Region chair was reported to have said that he will cut off his testicles if the former first lady wins the July 2011 presidential primaries.
He said the party will be better off retaining president John Mills in the 2012 General Election.
But upon sober reflection, Julious Debrah said his comments were out of place.
“Sincerely speaking I have reflected and I thought that using words, expressions like rubbish and things like that … were a little bit unpalatable.
“So first and foremost I want to apologise to the delegates; to the region and to also find the appropriate platform to apologise to the first couple,” he said.
He however debunked assertions by a section of the media that the region’s declaration for President John Mills was done at the behest of the Castle.
He said the constituency executives, District Chief Executives, founding members of the region, willingly, without any coercion, declared their unflinching support for President Mills.
Julious claimed that as a marked departure from several other declarations by other regions, the Eastern Region rather than officially declaring support for President Mills decided to appeal to former first lady to rescind her decision to contest.
“At the end of it all, we said we do not want to follow the trend that the others are following, so we are not going to say we are declaring but rather we would want to appeal to the former first lady so that we can all present one front. There was no heckling, no fighting, no argument, nothing," he said.
