Ex- Zebilla MP John Ndebugri says the re-nomination of Emelia Arthur for election as District Chief Executive smacks of dictatorship by President Mills. Arthur was rejected by Assembly members of the Shama District after she failed to amass 50 per cent of the votes. Subsequent to her rejection, the Assembly members apologized to the president for failing to approve the nominee and requested that she be re-nominated. Local Government Minister, Yieleh Chireh in an interview said the President flouts no law, re-nominating the beleaguered nominee. But that assertion has been challenged, by Ndebugri, an avowed critic of the NDC, who also doubles as a lawyer and a consummate politician. Referring to section 16(10) of the local government law which sets the District Assemblies, Mr. Ndebugri said a person who fails to garner 50 per cent of the votes shall be withdrawn by the president who shall then nominate another person for re-election. Describing the law as unambiguous, Ndebugri is surprised the local government minister will insist no law has been infringed upon with the re-nomination of Emelia Arthur. He argued several plausible reasons could be advanced to support Arthur’s re-nomination but those will contravene the local government law.
