The Police in Kaneshie have arrested six leaders of the Circle-Neoplan station branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), for embarking on a demonstration without police permit.

The drivers had converged at the bus terminal on Thursday, to demand the resignation of their Union Chairman, Kwabena Badu.

They accused the chairman, Kwabena Badu of over-staying his tenure in office and allegedly embezzling over Gh¢600,000 meant for a building project.

The drivers claim they have not seen any development in the terminal since Mr. Badu took office some 22 years ago. They also accuse him of failing to account for monies charged as "booking fees" from the drivers.

"We are charged Gh¢150 per bus whenever we load passengers from here to Kumasi...not less than 60 buses load from this station to Kumasi on daily basis [and] yet we don't see what the monies charged us are used for," some angry drivers told Michaela.

The demonstrators however, clashed with police personnel detailed there to ensure law and order resulting in the arrest of their leaders. Two persons who were injured in the process are receiving treatment at the hospital.

   

Kaneshie District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Senam Adika told Joy News the six are being investigated for causing public disturbance in the area without permit.

"Whatever they did there was unlawful...we just heard that there was a commotion there. For now it is that disturbance that they initiated that is [why] we are holding them," Chief Supt. Adika said.
