The Majority and minority leaders in parliament are demanding increased security amidst fears regional terror threat places Ghana’s legislature as a target.
This comes as the Ghana Police Service is commissioning a special police post for parliament to improve security.
From now on, entering into the enclave of Parliament will no longer be as easy as everyone including parliamentarians will have to go through stringent security check.
At a short ceremony, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor, urged the officers assigned to the police post to be impartial in the discharge of their duties.
The IGP and Interior Minister fear that the insecurity in the West African Sub-region could spill over to Ghana.
Security experts believe that the nature of Parliamentarians' work and the fact that they all congregate at one place at a particular time make them prime targets for any terror attack.
The IGP explains this was part of the reason they put up a divisional police headquarters which will oversee Parliament and the enclave of the State House.
Aside the terror fears, parliamentarians have for some time now been calling for personal security following the killing of Member of Parliament for Abuakwa-North, J.B. Danquah-Adu.
