Authorities at the Nkwantanan Primary School in Madina here in Accra have now stopped asking pupils to bring used sachet water bags to school.
It follows a Joy News broadcast exposing the practice where pupils earned marks for collecting the empty bags which the school sold to recycling companies.
Some parents who criticized the practice are excited at the ban.
One parent said her daughter immediately settled to do her homework when she returned from school Tuesday, arguing had the practice not been stopped “she would have gone to look for [the plastic waste], and then come home late, do her homework late in the night.”
The Ghana Education Service says it has cautioned managers of the school not to engage pupils in such activities again.
The Deputy Director General of the GES, Mr Stephen Adu commended Joy FM for bringing the attention of the authorities to the practice.
He urged other media organizations to focus attention on wrong things in the country’s schools.
