Authorities of National Lottery Authority (NLA), on Thursday presented a cheque for GH¢10,000 to authorities of the College of Health Science, Korle Bu, to boost training of medical practitioners in the country.
It was in response to an appeal by authorities of the College to cooperate bodies to contribute towards their Endowment Fund established in August 2000 to support its students.
Mr David Lamptey, Legal and Corporate Affairs Manager of NLA, presenting the second cheque, said it formed part of a five-year commitment to present GH¢10,000 annually to the College, which started in 2009. The Authority has therefore presented to the College a total sum of GH¢20,000 towards the endownment fund to train postgraduate doctors in Ghana.
He expressed the NLA's concern about the need to train quality health care personnel to offer better services to the nation.
Mr Lamptey pledged assistance of NLA to the College to achieve its objectives.
Professor Aaron Nii Lante Lawson, Provost of the College, commended authorities of NLA for their kind gesture and urged other cooperate entities to support the College.
He said the College established 10 years ago with only the University of Ghana Medical School under its tutelage now had six other institutions.
They are; Dental School, School of Allied Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, School of Nursing and Noguchi Memorial Research Institute.
Prof. Lawson said establishment of the fund had made tremendous impact on enrolment into post graduate programmes in the College because students were supported with scholarships and awards of research grants for Master of Philosophy and PhD research projects.
"Before the fund was instituted, it was not attractive for young graduates into post graduate programmes and old lecturers were still teaching in the system. Now we have young people taking over as specialists in the health sector," he said.
