The National Media Commission has criticized the media for failing to show active interest in public discourse on issues regarding the decentralization concept.
According to the NMC, the media’s lack of appreciation of issues on local governance has resulted in the apathy towards district level elections.
The Executive Secretary of the NMC, George Sarpong, in an interview with Joy News said “there have been considerable changes in the policy reforms in the local governance sector and we wanted to know how all these play up in the context of the upcoming elections. Almost to the last coverage that you (the media) monitored everybody was only talking about very specific incidents and questions of turn out but you also never got an understanding of what media analysis of the causes of the turn out was."
Mr. Sarpong is therefore calling for a paradigm shift to whip up public interest before the next general elections.
