Some residents of Kpandai in the Northern Region have called on the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to intervene to avoid a possible violent conflict between the Gonjas and Nawuris.
This follows reports that a potential conflict is brewing between the Nawuris and the Gonjas in Kpandai as a result of the proposed installation of a new paramount chief for the area by the Gonjas.
The Nawuris insist they already have a chief, in the person of Nana Bristian Akore Atorsah II and, therefore, perceive the proposed installation of a new chief as a threat to peace and security in the area.
Over the weekend, some Nawuri youth held a protest through the streets of Kpandai to register their resentment and disenchantment with the proposed installation.
They said the protest was also intended to draw government’s attention to the purported plan by the Gonja youth to install a paramount chief for them and the repercussions of such an action if it was pursued.
Wearing red armbands and attire, the demonstrators carried placards, some of which read: “We need peace in Kpandai”, “Down with traitors”, “Kpandai is for Nawuris and not for Gonjas” and “Nawuriland is different from Gonjaland”.
They later presented a petition to the District Chief Executive for Kpandai, Mr Jasper Moayi Jato, for onward presentation to the President.
The General Secretary of the Nawuri Youth Association, Mr Gregory Anijadong, who led the group, warned those pursuing the installation agenda to keep their hands off Nawuri affairs.
He said Nawuris were capable of choosing their own leader and, therefore, did not need any assistance from the Gonjas to do so, adding, “The Nawuri State is neither an appendage nor a continuation of the Gonja kingdom.”
The DCE commended the youth for holding a peaceful protest and urged them to be patient while he forwarded their concerns to the Presidency.
When contacted, Raymond Asuo, who is alleged to be the person to be installed as the new chief, insisted that he had been installed since 1988 as the Paramount Chief of the Nawuris and that his stool name was Nana Abuga Abass.
