JoyNews sources say the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is taking steps to address the looming fuel shortage.
This follows a threat by the Tanker Owners Union to halt the transportation of petroleum products across the country over claims some foreign entities are taking over their businesses.
Under the local content law and the deregulation of the petroleum sector, the haulage of petroleum products across the country is reserved for indigenous Ghanaian companies.
But according to the union a Chinese firm behind the construction of an Oil Refinery at Tema, Sentuo has brought tankers to offload the petroleum products locally.
They, therefore, called on NPA to address the issue to prevent them from withdrawing their services.
Member of the Tankers Union, Ignatious Doe has confirmed that the NPA is working to address their confirms
“I would say yes. To some extent they have responded to our letter and tried to explain things to us,” he said in Joy FM’s Middaynews on Tuesday.
He stated that the NPA had also asked the Chinese company to cease operations because their involvement was illegal under the law.
He, however, stated that the union will continue to keep an eye on the Chinese company and monitor it and that if the company continues to operate, they will take strike action.
