A decision by the Elections Committee of the New Patriotic Party to allow proxy voting in the upcoming Congress to elect new executives has been met with protests in the party.
Some aggrieved members of the party held a demonstration, Wednesday, in protest over the decision.
One of them told Joy News they do not understand why proxy voting would be allowed in the national elections when it was not used in the unit and regional elections.
But the Chairman of the Elections Committee of the party Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah in a reaction said the arguments by the critics of proxy voting have no merit.
According to him, the issue of proxy voting was thoroughly discussed at a meeting with no substantial disagreements.
He said the few concerns about proxy voting were addressed in the meeting with members of National Executive Committee fully convinced about the propriety of allowing proxy voting.
He also dismissed claims that proxy voting was not allowed in the regional elections.
According to him, in one of the regional elections he superintended, Freda Prempeh, MP for Tano North was allowed to vote by proxy.
Proxy Voting is a voting procedure in which some members of a decision-making body or party may delegate their voting power to other members of the same body or party to vote in their absence.
The NPP delegates Congress is scheduled for April 12 in Tamale in the Northern Region.
