Polls have closed in eight regions where the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) conducted elections to chose Constituency Executives as part of preparations towards the 2016 general glections.

The officers elected in Saturday's vote will constitute delegates that will elect Parliamentary Candidates and the party's flagbearer for 2016 elections.

Although voting was generally peaceful across the country, in the Volta Region six constituencies could not hold their elections due to minor misunderstandings.

Volta Regional Correspondent Ivy Sertodzi reported that party executives in constituencies like Akatsi West and Biakoye told her voting did not take place because some electoral rules and regulations were breached.

However, in constituencies such as Aflao and Ketu North elections proceeded smoothly.

In the Ashanti Region, Luv FM's Kwabena Ampratwum, reports that elections took place smoothly.

In Oforikrom, incumbent Constituency Chairman of the party retained his seat.

Martin Adjei-Mensah, NPP Coordinator of Elections said told Joy News, he was happy with the outcome of Saturday's elections because it "went as scheduled".

"Across the country, the process was to start today but not end in itself .It will continue throughout the week until next Saturday. We don't expect any election to go beyond December 21”, he explained.

The Constituency Elections were temporarily suspended in the Eastern and Northern Regions.

 In the Eastern Region, party executives are commiserating with the family of the bereaved National Women’s Organiser of the party, Otiko Djaba who had lost his father.

Elections will have take place on Sunday December 15, according to Mr Martin Adjei-Mensah.

In the Northern Region also, the constituency and polling station executive elections were not held because of "challenges" in the constituencies' voters register.

NPP Northern Regional Secretary, Faisal Gbanjiri explained that "most of the constituencies have not finished with their voters album [register]...and that is the basis on which we are going to conduct the elections".

He said the elections have been rescheduled to take place on December 17, 2013, but was optimistic the December 21 deadline would be met.
