A throng of party supporters has stormed the Kumasi Central police station demanding the immediate release of the Ashanti regional chairman Bernard Antwi Bosiako.

The NPP supporters are amassing outside the prison wall kept at bay by a wall of military police officers, Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor has reported.

It comes after Antwi Bosiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi turned himself in at the police station Tuesday afternoon after the police made a public call for him to report.

Wontumi is wanted after allegedly assaulting NPP MP  for Manhyia North Collins Owusu Amankwah and the NPP Constituency Secretary, Mr Felix Ibrahim.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon at the Nana Fodjuor registration centre in Krofrom in the Manhyia North constituency where the limited voters' registration exercise was ongoing.

Wontumi’s 'macho men' watched as the outspoken chairman pushed the MP against the pile of bricks and slapped him. Raining insults was the least of his methods of assault,eye-witnesses say.

But the emotionally charged throng say the incident is a “family matter” and should be settled outside the law.

Former mayor of Kumasi Kofi Jumah told Joy News “even if the allegation is true, it is a simple assault that calls for at least a bail…what is the need for the police to detain him?”

Some supporters told Erastus Asare Donkor that Wontumi disciplined the MP and the secretary just as a father disciplines his son.

They were heard chanting in twi, ‘Bi bi be si’, to wit ‘something is about to happen’. The NPP supporters are incensed, claiming the police demeaned their chairman by stripping him of his shirt.

One person was temporarily arrested after he tested the patience of the police by breaching an order not to cross into a perimeter.

He was detained for at least an hour and later granted bail. He told Joy News he has no idea the charges leveled against him.

But Ashanti regional police commander DCOP Kofi Boakye told Joy News, the NPP regional chairman has not been arrested. He explained that he reported to the police station willingly to assist in investigations.

He warned against inciting the public against the police administration.
