One body has been recovered in the devastating Daboya boat accident in the Northern Region.
The marine police, recovered the body Wednesday, 24 hours after the incident happened.
Leader of the Marine Police, ASP Daniel Dadzie revealed on Joy FM’s “News Night” the body was recovered upon intensified search adding that another body is yet to be recovered.
Mr.Dadzie also disclosed that they were collaborating with other communities along the banks of the river to inform them if the body washes ashore.
The accident occurred, Tuesday morning, when a canoe on which at least 13 people were travelling capsized in the middle of the Daboya river due to a storm.
According to eyewitness Sawesi Sulemana who spoke to Joy News the accident occured at about 8am,Tuesday.
But due to the tireless efforts of the marine police and National Disaster Management Organization(NADMO) officials, nine people have been rescued as at Wednesday after it was initially reported six people went missing.
Joy News’ Northern Regional correspondent Martina Bugri, reports that the bodies of the retrieved persons are to be buried as soon as possible. A ritual is also expected to be performed at the banks of the river.
Education on the use of life jackets and the construction of a bridge over the river has been underscored by the authorities in the area as a formidable solution to prevent such fatalities.
