Congestion at the Kumasi Central Prison is worsening, as the facility continues to receive increasing numbers of criminals and suspects.
Authorities of the prison are calling on government to relocate the facility.
He made the call during a donation by the immediate past President of Commerce.
The prison was originally constructed to house inmates numbering up to 700.
However, recent spate of criminal cases in the region has seen the facility currently housing a little above 1,900 inmates, a number more than twice its original capacity.
According to Deputy Director of Prison (DDP), Akwesi Asamoah Fenning relocating the facility would help reduce congestion.
“I agree with those calling for the relocation of the facility. The prison is facing a massive accommodation deficit.
“I think relocating the facility would help ease the congestion,” he said.
