The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Mr Opam Brown Akolbire, has entreated parents to sacrifice towards the education of their children.
He, said one of the major interventions that could be used to reduce the chronic poverty levels in the region was education and urged parents to give up luxuries to enable them take good care of their children's education as they stood to reap better economic returns in future.
He lamented the situation where some parents refused to sell their, animals to cater for their children's education, indicating the best legacy they could bequeath their children was education.
The MP, who was interacting with some members of his constituency as part of his tour of the Bolgatanga Municipality, said considering the poverty level in the region, education holds the key to unlocking this problem and urged them to give priority attention to the education of their children.
He indicated that he was assisting 260 students to pursue their education at both secondary and tertiary levels and that over 600 students had also applied for support but his Common Fund was not enough to cater for these huge numbers of the applicants.
He said through lobbying with the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly and other development partners, it number of school infrastructure including three classroom blocks, offices and stores had been provided in some ,communities in his constituency.
Some of these beneficiary communities, he said were Kantia, Azoribisi, Tindongmolgo, Afogro, Soe, , Yariga, Yorogo and Madina, all in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region.
Mr Akolbire added that he was still lobbying to get more support from the GETFund and other development partners to develop more educational infrastructure in the area and commended the GETFund secretariat for their interventions in the area of education.
