The Minority in Parliament is urging government to as matter urgency open the cocoa processing factory to serve as a befitting tribute to the bereaved family and victims in an accident Thursday morning that claimed two lives.
The occupants of the Mercedes sprinter vehicle which collided with a military ambulance were farmers and employees of the Cocoa Processing Company on their way to Parliament house to listen to the Finance Minister responses on how to revamp the factory.
The question filed by the Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Kwadwo Okyere Darko unfortunately, could not be responded to because the Finance Minister was not available.
Mr Darko said, all the stakeholders in the cocoa industry had contacted him that they were very interested in the questions that were being asked.
"For them, the last 28 months has been very difficult and just over two years, 22 of their members have died because they have not been able to sustain their lives in terms of medical bills and other pressures at home," Mr Darko explained.
The deceased, he said, felt that coming to Accra to listen to the question was important so they could have the opportunity to meet the Minister of Cocoa Affairs who doubles as the Finance Minister to get answers.
Majority Chief Whip, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak who broke the news on the floor of parliament described the accident as unfortunate.
Witnesses at the scene of the accident say the Sprinter bus loaded with passengers from Takoradi heading towards Accra collided with the ambulance at Komenda Safwi, a town along the road and skidded into a nearby bush.
Central Regional correspondent, Richard Kojo Nyarko confirmed the deaths and added that 15 more are in critical condition. Five others including a military man driving the ambulance have been treated and discharged.
