Businessman and economic policy analyst, Senyo Hosi has spoken out on the controversy involving acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, Victoria Emeafa Hardcastle, and the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.
In a Facebook post, Mr Hosi clarified that contempt of Parliament applies only when the House is in session.
“It is only when Parliament is constituted that submissions to a parliamentarian on the floor or to Parliament can be contemptuous. Once Parliament rises, an MP is simply just another citizen. The building of Parliament is not Parliament; it is the sitting of its membership that is,” he explained.
He urged MPs to show humility and respect to the public.
“I respect Parliament, but its members are not superior humans. Respect the citizens and earn respect back. Always remember to be humble, for your power emanates from the people,” he stated.
Hosi also defended Emeafa Hardcastle, arguing that she owes no one a public apology after already apologising privately to the MP involved.
“While Emeafa may opt to render one, she owes no one a public apology, especially after apologising privately to the MP. He said it himself yesterday,” he wrote.
Condemning the threats made against Hardcastle, Mr Hosi commended Annoh Dompreh for maintaining composure during the exchange, though he wished it had happened earlier to prevent further provocation.
"You threaten a citizen, saying you will deal with her and expect her to be cowed? I do not tolerate bullies, and neither does Emeafa.
I nonetheless commend Annoh Dompreh for his composure on set. I wish he did it earlier to avoid the provocation.
