The Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service has uncovered four different accounts used by philanthropist, Michelle McGowano, to divert funds meant for the treatment of three children with strange skin diseases.

The three children from Jirapa District in the Upper West region were diagnosed with dermatitis, a rough skin condition for which reason they were called alligator kids.

The harrowing story of the children attracted sympathizers including Togolese football star, Emmanuel Adebayor, who donated money for their treatment.

But the Ministry of Children, Gender and Social Protection is accusing the philanthropist coordinating the donations of breaching procedure.

The Minister, Nana Oye Lithur has therefore ordered the arrest of  Michelle McGowano.

Greater Accra Regional Police PRO, DSP Freeman Tettey told Joy News that apart from an account opened in Ghana, three other accounts have also been opened by the American woman outside the country.

"The woman in question has a case to answer. She wanted to take advantage of the case of these three children to make money," he stated.

He said the woman has diverted the funds she received from the foreign accounts for her personal use.

Freeman Tettey said the police has forwarded a docket on the issue to the Attorney General for advice.

He also denied allegations by the woman in question that she was sexually abused by the investigator.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Gender and Social Protection says the children are responding to treatment and are being catered for by the state.
