The Vice-Chancellor for the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof John Gyampong has urged physicians and surgeons across the country to embrace the use of technology in their activities in the health system.
Speaking at the 17th Annual General and Science Meeting (AGSM) of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) under the theme, “Improving Access to Healthcare System in the New Normal: Embracing Technology,” Prof Gyapong underscored that the Covid-19 pandemic has revealed the significance of technology in the country’s health system.
He stressed that medical practitioners need to avail themselves to learn and acclimate the new normal of the world which is technology.

“I think we have come a long way as a country. The Covid-19 has been a big challenge for all of us. So far the country has done pretty well in terms of management. But things are lingering on, so as they do, we need to ensure that we can prove resilience even under this challenge and the best way to do that is to embrace technology.
“Irrespective of how remotely you are, , let us embrace technology to that are available and are being used all over the world otherwise we will be left behind,” he said.
According to the Vice Chancellor, a change of mindset to adopt the ‘new normal’ will be one of the major means to bridging the digital gap.
“Some of us probably feel that ‘we were born before computers’ so we take a back seat and not get involved in this whole process.
“So as far as the way forward is concerned, I think we need to engage our training institutions get all of us to decide that this [technology] is the future for us,” he said.

On his part, the Acting Rector of Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS), Dr Henry Lawson said processes are underway for the college to continue to harness the full possibilities of technology to ensure the smooth running of the establishment.
He noted that, the College is planning to use online submission procedures for all proposals and dissertations for Senior Residents adding that “the electronic logbook system is being revamped and will be re-launched next year.”

Dr Lawson then congratulated the graduands and encouraged them to make their actions in line of duty reflect the ideals and standards of the College.
