Plan Ghana spends over $1 million annually on programmes and projects in the Central Region. The Country Director of Plan Ghana, Mr Prem Shukla, said this was likely to increase in the future to ensure that many possible interventions were brought to the people to enhance their socio-economic lives. One of such projects, a new six-unit classroom block and library with furniture and books to serve the people of the Taabosom community in the Mfantseman municipality of the Central Region, has been inaugurated. Now pupils of the school who hitherto attended classes under sheds have decent classrooms to accommodate them. The GHc158,000 project was undertaken by Plan Ghana with communal labour and some support from the Mfantseman District Assembly. Mr Shukla, as part of Plan’s objective of assisting children to achieve their potential in life, said several interventions had been undertaken in the fields of education, health, water and sanitation and credit support to support communities particularly. He stated that Plan Ghana had worked in the Central Region for 19 years and had focused extensively on infrastructural development, education, and micro-finance and child rights promotion. This, he said, had no doubt contributed towards remarkable achievement in human resource indicators such as high literacy rates, reduced infant and maternal mortality and increased growth promotion activities. Again, he said as part of strengthening the economic capacities of women and the youth, the Village Savings Loans Association programme was being implemented and said it was expected to help them cultivate savings habits and support households. He said the inauguration of the project underscored the determination of the government and civil society groups to forge stronger partnerships to galvanise energies and resources to address emerging development challenges. Mr Shukla appealed to the School Management Committee (SMA) and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) to ensure that the facility was well maintained. The Central Regional Minister, Mrs Ama Benyiwa Doe, commended efforts by Plan Ghana for working to improve the wellbeing of people particularly in the rural communities. She called for further collaboration in more communities to help enhance the living conditions in the rural areas of the region. Mrs Doe advised the community to enroll their wards in school and support them through school to ensure that the facility become beneficial to them. Mr Henry Hayford, the Municipal Chief Executive for Mfantseman, said the assembly had constructed 38 school blocks in various communities in the municipality to provide a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning but stated that more needed to be done and thanked Plan Ghana for the support. The Headteacher of the school, Mr Arhin, said the school was doing well academically and said he was optimistic the facility would encourage the staff and pupils to offer their best.
